Andersen Vocational Training Centre (AVTC)

Andersen Vocational Training Centre (AVTC), a key educational institution within Mount Elgon Trust (MET), provides vocational and technical training to learners who may not meet the qualifications for public university admission. As with APS and AHS, AVTC is part of the schools that MET runs, in collaboration with primary sponsor Mount Elgon Orchards, the Kenya National Government, and the County Government of Trans-Nzoia.

Founded in 2015, AVTC offers a wide range of trade courses to prepare students for entry into the workforce. The centre is one of the leading vocational training institutions in Trans-Nzoia County and currently serves 356 learners in 2025. AVTC has benefited from continuous support, including donations of equipment and facilities to improve the learning experience.

The courses offered include:

  • ICT;
  • Driving License;
  • Plumbing;
  • Fashion and Design;
  • Carpentry and Joinery;
  • Agribusiness and Agriculture;
  • Electrical and Electronics;
  • Food Processing and Catering;
  • Motor Vehicle Technology;
  • Metal Processing and Welding;
  • Building Technology/Masonry;
  • Hairdressing/Beauty Therapy.

Since its foundation, AVTC has experienced significant growth, with the number of courses offered increasing from 6 in 2019 to 12 today. This growth is driven by the increasing demand for skilled workers in the region, particularly in areas like plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry. The centre's success can also be attributed to the availability of modern training equipment and improved facilities, such as the recently constructed catering department, carpentry and plumbing workshops, and the upgrade of electrical and motor vehicle technology facilities.

To further support its learners, AVTC has received a donation from Tools to Work, which has provided essential tools like sewing machines for the fashion and design course, as well as equipment for other practical courses. This donation has not only enhanced the learning experience but also enabled learners to start their own businesses upon graduation.

With about 25% of AVTC's total population coming from neighbouring counties, the centre has also expanded its boarding facilities to accommodate around 120 people. The influx from surrounding areas speaks to the growing recognition of AVTC’s high-quality training and its ability to equip learners with skills that are in high demand in the job market. Recently, AVTC was ranked as the top Vocational Training Centre in the Upper Right Valley counties (Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, West Pokot, and Turkana) by the TVET Board, based on factors like management, learner population size, and the advancement of trade skills.

This recognition highlights AVTC’s continued success in empowering young people with the practical skills they need for employment or entrepreneurship.
